Steinhatchee Falls
Canoeing
is an extremely popular pastime in the Original Florida. A wide array of rental
providers and guides are available. Most of the providers also have
available planned trips on the area’s rivers which can accommodate the
distance and/or amount of time.
The Florida Recreational Trails System has three designated canoe
trails in the Original Florida. Discover long flowing rivers, light rapids
and high bluffs while enjoying a relaxing glimpse of the Original
Florida’s natural beauty.
Aucilla River: The coffee-colored river is recommended for
experienced canoeists. Rapids and man-made dams along the trail can be a
challenge, and become numerous and hazardous during low water.
Econfina Creek: Experienced canoeist will find this virtually
unspoiled stream a technical paddling challenge. It flows through scenic
river swamp, hammocks and flat pinelands. The springs that feed this swift
flowing stream have cut deep canyons in the limestone.
Santa Fe River: See where the river returns to the surface from
flowing underground for three miles. This 26-mile trail is classified as E
(easy) and is a good novice trail with smooth running water and gentle
curves. A variety of canoe providers are available at High Springs,
adjacent to the Santa Fe River. Other providers are located at Ginnie
Springs and near Ichetucknee Springs.
Steinhatchee River: See Steinhatchee Falls under a
canopy of trees.
Suwannee River: Learn about this historic river while canoeing
past the Wilderness of the Original Florida. Access points are from the
Suwannee River State Park, the Spirit of the Suwannee Canoe Outpost and
Great American Canoe Adventures in White Springs. The river is classified
as E-S (easy-strenuous) and has many campsites and sand bluffs along the
way to break. Near White Springs, the Suwannee River offers the only Class
3 shoals in Florida.
Withlacoochee
River: Madison County Highway 145, Twin Rivers Outfitters,
Pinetta,
Florida at Highway 150, Madison Blue Springs at State Road 6 and Suwannee
River State Park are access points to the Withlacoochee River.
